Building a Creation Station in a Flexible Learning Environment!
Help me give my students the OSMO storage cases and drawing kit, along with the flexible seating furniture including wobbly chairs, balance balls, laptop desks, inflatable chair and stacking stools.
Our school is comprised of students in grades K-4 and located in a suburban community within Southeastern Pennsylvania. We have a population of about 60 inquisitive dreamers and thinkers in 3rd grade.
Their imaginations are huge and always looking to expand even further.
They enjoy technology and are quite adept at using most devices. They love to move around the classroom and are rarely content to sit at a desk for a long period of time when they can lay under a desk or against a wall instead.
At any given time, about a third of the class will be standing by their desk while doing whole group instruction. Another third will be rocking in their chairs despite the safety concerns and reminders to keep "six legs on the floor if seated in a chair".
My Project
The flexible seating furniture and additional technology items will provide my students additional ways to take responsibility for their learning. Our class has many opportunities for independent work time and they can choose where they feel most comfortable. Hard tile floors, even with a few carpet squares do not always provide comfort. In addition, many students like to be “moving in place” while they work. I believe that comfort increases motivation to work.
I believe that new flexible seating furniture, coupled with current and new technology offerings will elevate student engagement.
Students tend to make good choices about their work locati0n when they are allowed to pick on their own, so they are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools and balance balls will allow students to sit at desks and tables but will still enable some movement. The inflatable chair provides a bit more comfort while the plastic stools are a nice alternative to sit lower or be more mobile. The lap desks will also provide more comfort options for reading, writing and working on laptops or iPads. All of these items will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out, prefer unique alternatives to the traditional desk/chair.
The OSMO storage kits and drawing station will add more options as well as ensure our technology is protected and lasts for as long as possible. These will be used not only for the Creation Station but many other learning opportunities in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science.
