This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember that feeling the night before the first day of school? I recall not being able to fall asleep as my mind would race, thinking about all the friends I would meet and my new classroom that I would spend the next year of my life in. Thoughts of all the possibilities kept me wide awake.

My new Kindergarten students will soon face that anxious night before school begins.

My sleepless nights are the result of wanting to create an amazing, cozy environment for my students, without the resources to make this happen. My students are a part of a public school in an urban setting. My Kindergarten students are diverse racially, socio-economically, religiously, and ethnically. They are about to embark on their introduction into elementary school and my goal is to make their year in Kindergarten one to remember.

My Project

As I prepare to create the most comfortable and inviting classroom environment for my students, the reality is I have limited resources to accomplish my goal. The only seating I have available for my students is plastic chairs at their tables. Every Kindergarten teacher knows that keeping children working at tables most of the day is not in their best interest. Young children need the freedom to move around as they are engaged in meaningful learning. I have visions of my students working all over the classroom, reading, writing and engaging in floor play. The bean bag seats I am requesting can be moved all around the classroom, increasing the number of work spaces. The soft seats would allow a small group of students to gather on the floor comfortably as they read, write and play together. The couch would provide an inviting space in our classroom library. The carpet would help create another small center for my kids to play games in happily, instead of a bare hardwood floor.

My Kindergarteners deserve a rich and relaxing learning environment. I consider our classroom to be our second home and it’s my goal to make as cozy and appealing as possible. I thank you in advance for your support!
