Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Learning a new language should feel accessible and motivating, not overwhelming. My middle school Spanish students learn best when they are exposed to language they can actually understand. This project focuses on building a classroom library of comprehensible Spanish readers—books written specifically for language learners using simple vocabulary, repetition, and engaging stories.

These readers allow students to read with confidence, even at the beginning stages of language learning.

Instead of translating word by word or feeling discouraged, students can focus on understanding the message, enjoying the story, and naturally acquiring Spanish. Reading for pleasure helps students build vocabulary, improve comprehension, and develop a positive relationship with the language.

To make these books easy to access, this project also includes magnetic shelves that will turn an unused wall into a visible, organized classroom library. When books are displayed and within reach, students are more likely to choose them, reread favorites, and see reading in Spanish as a normal and enjoyable part of class.

Together, these materials will help create a welcoming, literacy-rich environment where all students—regardless of their background or experience with Spanish—can feel successful and confident as language learners.
