My Students
My high school English students come to class from a variety of experiences, from a variety of home situations. From the very first day, they are seeking connection. Our small, farming community can sometimes feel isolating, and students come into my class craving that connection, desiring to share their voice and their stories.
I hope to build a learning community in my classroom that is connected, creative, and collaborative...from the very first day.
Many of the students in our class work either before or after school. Some wake early to muck out barn stalls, while others stay up late working at local restaurants. My students are hunters and gamers and 4-Hers and musicians and writers. We have a perspective different from those in the urban and suburban setting. Students have spent time exploring our stories. Who are we as a class? As a student body? As a community?
My Project
Have you heard of Breakout Edu? I have been hearing it around educational conferences for the past couple of years and recently had an opportunity to play with a group of teachers. I now understand why so many educators are talking about it!
Collaboration, creative and critical thinking, and problem-solving are the skills our students need for the ever-evolving worlds inside and outside of our classrooms.
Breakout Edu was developed as a gaming experience that educators can use to engage learners of all ages. This game allows for students to improve these skills, while also learning content. Using a series of clues, locks, invisible markers/UV flashlights, timers, locked boxes, puzzles, and codes, teachers can engage their learners in course content, encourage creative thinking, and build classroom community. In the game, students are introduced to a problem which asks them to use clues from their reading, from texts, from their knowledge of the course to solve challenges and unlock related locks. Students work as a team to solve the game.
The materials requested for this project will help to build two Breakout Edu boxes to be used in my high school English classes.
