Building a Colorful, Confident Math Classroom for Philadelphia Students

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a second-year Algebra 1 teacher in the Philadelphia School District, I am dedicated to creating a vibrant, supportive, and engaging learning environment for my 9th-grade students, many of whom come from underserved communities. My students are curious, creative, and capable; they just need the right tools to thrive.

These materials will help me design scaffolded math projects and visual supports that make concepts more accessible.

The easel pads and graph sticky notes will allow students to model their thinking visually. The heavy-duty hole punch, guillotine cutter, and printer will help me prepare individualized packets and colorful anchor charts to reinforce learning. The Math Dictionary will be used as a reference tool to build academic vocabulary, and the colored pencils will support hands-on, project-based assessments.

Creating a more colorful, organized, and welcoming classroom directly supports students’ mental health by reducing anxiety and boosting their confidence in math. This project will help transform my classroom into a space where students feel motivated, supported, and empowered to succeed.
