Building a Classroom Library and Lifelong Readers

My Students

“Shouldn't schools be the place where students interact with interesting books? Shouldn't the faculty have an ongoing laser-like commitment to put good books in our students' hands? Shouldn't this be a front-burner issue at all times?” -Kelly Gallagher

As a first-year teacher this year, I was both surprised at how many of my students voiced a love for "reading for fun" and dismayed at the lack of resources I had to offer them.

With only two full-length books required in my state's English curriculum, I was nervous that my students' love for reading would wane with such limited reading material with which to connect. Therefore, I implemented "free reading time" to begin every class: a period of around ten minutes where students can spend some time reading outside the curriculum. Because I didn't have any books to offer my students, I brought them to the school's small library to try to find some on their own, and my heart melted seeing the number of students excited about finding books that interested them and finding a quiet place to sit down and start them. I would like my own classroom to be a place where students can have similar experiences.

My Project

Therefore, I would like to start my own classroom library so that I can ensure that students will have both choice and guidance in their selections for free reading time and that all students have books to read regardless of their circumstance. The school I work with rests on the verge of being inner city, and it is important to me that I provide my students with the resources they need to succeed both academically and in their own personal lives. I hope that by providing students with a large variety of books, their love for reading will be further solidified and stay with them as they grow through high school.

I don't think I can stress enough how invaluable books are for students, especially ones with limited opportunities and resources for uncovering their own truths about themselves and the world around them.

I would be so grateful to have help starting my classroom's library, and hopefully as I continue teaching through the years I'll be able to turn it into something really wonderful.
