My students need 34 book titles by authors such as Anthony Horowitz, Rick Riordan and Peg Kehret in order to keep my students engaged during independent reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When my students entered my class many of them were reading below grade level. In order to overcome the challenges my students face, we participate in an individualized reading program. The problem, however, is that we do not have enough leveled novels to meet my students various needs.
I teach seventh and eight grade language arts at an inner-city school in Missouri.
Many of my students entered seventh grade reading two or more years below grade level. Despite their reading deficiencies, they are the most motivated and dedicated students that I have ever met. This year they have set huge reading goals. By the end of the year they want to grow a full two years in reading. This reading goal will not only help them get back on grade level, but will also set them on a better track in life.
My Project
In order to meet their learning goals, my students participate in an independent reading program where they are get to choose a book that they are interested in. They then spend an additional two hours practicing the skills we learn in class by applying them to their individual novel.
In order to meet the needs of all my students we need more books that are written at various reading levels. This will allow my students to choose a novel that is written at their level so that they do not become frustrated when they are reading on their own. This way they can gradually move on to more difficult books. Additionally, these books have been specifically requested by the students to ensure that they will be excited about reading them.
