Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with a wide range of students across my school. I have noticed that in each grade level students are struggling with fluency, a critical component in skilled reading. My goal is to create more fluent readers, so they can not only comprehend what they read, but it enjoy it as well.

As a reading coach, I work with students at every grade level.

I get an unique opportunity to see students across the entire school and get a feel for where our students, as a whole, are struggling. As a predominately Hispanic population, the majority of our students are English Language Learners, which is one of the challenges the students have learned to overcome. The students at my school are hard workers, highly motivated to learn, and most of all, just want the best future possible. Despite the fact most live in poverty, they have a thirst for knowledge and to become the best they can be. Working at a school in a poverty stricken area means that we don't always have the funds to purchase "extra" materials that we feel would be beneficial to our students. However, that doesn't stop our teachers from doing whatever it takes to provide our students with the learning experiences they need and deserve.

My Project

I am asking for a variety of grade level fluency games, including Fluency & Comprehension Partner Scripts and Building Fluency Card Bank. These materials will be used across grade levels to build fluency in struggling readers. If this project is funded, the materials will be available for teacher check out to use in small and partner groups to reteach and enrich fluency skills. By using these materials students will build fluency by reading appropriately leveled text accurately with speed and expression. Becoming more fluent readers will allow them to better understand the text at hand and reduce their reluctance to read.

As a reading teacher, my goal is to foster the same love for reading that I have in my students.

I want them to see how a literate life will open many doors for them. However, factors out of their control are working against them. Receiving this grant will mean that I am one step closer to helping my students become life-long readers and learners. Fluency instruction is critical to the success of a reader. These tools will play an essential part in teaching my students to be fluent readers.
