My Students
“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” – Roald Dahl
Our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds: Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Somali, Thai, Mexican, African-American and Caucasian to name a few. The diversity and the way these children notice and yet don't notice it, is vibrant, entertaining and endearing. All of my students have things in common though. They love to learn. They love to sing. They love to explore and create. And as Dahl stated above, they all deserve a terrific advantage.
My Project
Students in each classroom at our school are reading at a variety of levels. Best practice for these students would be that their teacher met with them each day in a small group, with a book at their specific instructional level and worked with them day by day to increase their reading level bit by bit by bit. Using this model, kids are challenged, but they're not frustrated. They build confidence and skills quickly when a task is within their reach, they work hard and achieve it, then the teacher raises the level gradually.
However, in order for this to work, teachers need access to a large selection of books at a range of reading levels.
This grant is seeking supplies to build a book room in our school where teachers can go and check out small group collections of books on a weekly basis to use with their classes. I have posted separate grants to ask for the actual books. This grant is hoping to get the supplies to organize the book room and build a checkout system for teachers to use so that books can be efficiently shared throughout the staff.
Our kids need and deserve access to targeted instruction in reading. Teachers need a way to get the books required for teaching those lessons. You can help make that happen. The items in this grant may seem simple or boring because they are office supplies, but a lack of simple supplies like these can be a huge barrier to making systems in schools work.
Thank you for helping our students and teachers do their best work possible.
