Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a diverse group of students. Some are new arrivals and just learning the language and some are struggling learners. They are young people that face poverty, violence and other socioeconomic challenges every day. I want them to experience the wonders of science and exploration of the natural world.
In my classroom my students are challenged to find solutions to problems through collaboration and critical thinking.
When I have the materials for them to use, each student gets to show us their understanding in their own unique way.
My Project
Students learn best through direct experience. This project will bring to life the balance of Earths systems within the biosphere that they create. They will be challenged to design a closed system that supports life and is balanced. Questions the students will have to ask themselves are: How much food will be consumed each day? What will you need to support the animal life in the biosphere? What will you need to support the plant life in the biosphere? How much food do you expect to be able to grow within your biosphere? If you bring in other large predators what impact will they have on the biosphere?
Direct observation and analysis allows students to reflect on their own work and come up with new solutions.
These biospheres will stay in the classroom and students will make observations and collect data. Their conclusions will be based on the final conditions within the biosphere at the end of the school year.
