This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am beyond excited to be teaching a 2nd grade class at an elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia this coming school year. The majority of my students are DLLs (Dual Language Learners), over 80% of students are learning English as a second language and Spanish is their first language. We are a Title 1 school meaning that over 80% of our students are considered low-income. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and will rely on my classroom library to check out high-quality books. As majority of my students will be developing their English language skills I want them to have books that strengthen both their first language (Spanish) and second language (English). Books are so important to my students and I want to give them quality, enriching books that will create a love of reading!

My Project

By donating to this project you will not only be helping the students explore reading in both Spanish and English but you will also be supporting their parents, as most are mainly Spanish speaking, as they will have more opportunities to help their children practice reading each night with these Spanish/English books. I intentionally chose some classic story books in this list as well as new books because I want my students to have equal access to high-quality texts. Whether it is their first day in my classroom and they feel don't feel as confident in speaking/reading English or they are fluent in both languages, I want my students to have the joy and comfort in picking up a book from our classroom library and finding multiple reading options to choose from. The goal of including these books into my classroom library is for students to grow in their confidence as readers and strengthen their bilingual literacy skills!
