Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school library is currently under construction, so I am temporarily running the library out of a classroom that was never designed to function as a library. The room feels more like an institutional X-ray room than a welcoming place for reading, discovery, and connection, and it lacks much of the infrastructure that makes a library work well. I am working creatively with what I have to make this temporary space as inviting, comfortable, and efficient as possible for my students.

My goal is to create a welcoming library space where students can comfortably read, explore books, work together, and have a place to learn and recharge.

Area rugs will soften the cold, institutional feel of the room and create more inviting areas for students to read and spend time. They will also provide a more stable surface for our book carts, which are currently shaky on the classroom floor. A loveseat will give students a comfortable place to read independently, talk about books, collaborate, or simply have a quiet moment during the school day.

My students are resilient, curious, and resourceful, and they deserve a library that feels welcoming even while their permanent library is unavailable. Many come from families with limited resources and may not have a quiet or private space of their own at home, making the opportunity to read, work, and simply be comfortable at school especially meaningful.

These items will improve our temporary library now, but they are also an investment in our permanent library. When construction is complete, the rugs and loveseat will move with us and continue providing comfortable, functional spaces for students for years to come.
