Building a Better Classroom Library

My students need organized bookshelves that allows them to easily browse the classroom library to find "just right" books. These bookshelves will be able to house the books, organized into bins by reading level.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are sixth grade elementary students at an inner city school. They are eager to learn, but many face circumstances that can make learning an obstacle. For many, school is the only stable part of their day.

It is my job to guide these students as they break past these hardships and become successful problem solvers who are ready to face real world challenges.

This task is not always easy, and these projects help make the process more enjoyable.

My Project

As a teacher, it can be difficult to get 6th graders to foster a love for reading. A lack of interest and a wide range of reading levels within the classroom are my main obstacles. This year, my goal is to get all of my students to select and independently read books for pleasure.

To achieve this goal, I must make our classroom library accessible to a variety of readers.

To do this, I will use the bins to group books by reading levels (A-Z). This way, students will be able to quickly and easily locate level appropriate books. The bookshelves will store the bins when they are not in use. It is my hope that in creating an organized library, students will find the joy in browsing for books and reading for pleasure!
