Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is an upper grade Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom. Students with disabilities who receive Integrated Co-Teaching services are educated with age appropriate peers in the general education classroom. My students are diverse, bright, and brimming with potential. They are excited about learning, but many of them have fallen far behind and learning does not always come easy for them. An increased need for repetition makes new content difficult to access. A read aloud, sideshow, and worksheet are rarely engaging enough to make the content stick. All qualify for free or reduced price school lunches, a measure often used to indicate economic status. More than half of the students in the class are more than two full academic years behind in reading, writing, and math. Our class is blended, meaning some days we are in the physical classroom and other days we learn in the virtual classroom.
My Project
The new school year is fast approaching! This year students will be back in person. The classroom has a library, yet it needs cozy seats that encourage students to relax with a good book. The seating and organizational bins will enhance the calming classroom environment that I strive to create. Students are encouraged to process their reading by pausing to jot down their thoughts, with the variety of post-its student's can track different story elements.
Whiteboards are another class tool that students enjoy using, these are used during ELA small groups for practicing sight words as well as during math groups to show and revise our thinking about numbers.
All of the materials requested in this project will be used to create a welcoming space for all students. Thank you for this opportunity.
