My students need two Chromebooks in order to connect our class to the Internet, for doing research, as well as publishing their findings on our class blog.

My Students
We live in a digital age. Students today must be fully literate in technology, and be able to interact with the Internet in meaningful ways if they hope to succeed. Our school of 2,100 students share 120 computers in 4 labs. This presents a massive barrier to learning essential 21st century skills.
I teach at a large, urban, comprehensive, diverse, public high school.
Many of our students are low income and largely come from immigrant households. A significant portion of our population is on free and reduced lunch. Despite these challenges, our students are highly motivated and often make it to 4 year universities.
Several of my former students who have gone on to university have come back to visit. One common remark they make is how the students who are now their peers in college have had much more experience with technology than they did as a student at our school. With this grant, and more like it, I hope to increase technology usage at our school, and level the playing field for our students, as they go off to college and beyond.
My Project
I am requesting two Chromebooks for my classroom. I aim to integrate technology into my class as much as possible, which isn't easy given the lack of resources at my school. Many of my students also lack access to technology at home. With these computers I will be able to have my AP Human Geography and US History students go online in my classroom, in order to investigate issues that we are studying in more depth.
I will be able to instruct students on how to find sourcing information for websites, how to identify credible sources, and locate bias. I will also be able to have students publish work on our class blog, and have their peers read and respond to their posts. For geography there are a myriad of maps and articles online that relate to the course materials and provide up-to-date and real world examples of course concepts, right from the headlines. For history, there are hundreds of primary source documents that I will teach students how to uncover.
While many students go online everyday, I aim to teach them how to filter information effectively, to critically analyze information from the Internet, and learn how to synthesize and publish their findings on our class blog.
This will also increase interaction between students outside of the classroom, as they continue the discourse online. By having more access to technology in my classroom I will be able to achieve these goals and better prepare my students for the demands of the digital age
More than half of students from low‑income households
