Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Pre-k and Kindergartners are students in a K-8 school in a rural, agricultural area of Northern California. The families of my students visit the beach, river, go hiking, fishing, and enjoy hunting. There are plenty of things to do in our beautiful outdoor area, but hands-on science activities can be a struggle for my students. I want to help my students learn to become engaged in being creative engineers through collaboration centers.
My students are eager to learn and become engineers through group collaboration!!
About 80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Half of my students are minority and come from low income households. My classroom is a safe and engaging community, where students can speak in their primary language (Spanish) and not be judged. Having hands on science activities and kindergarten size tables, will facilitate accessibility and collaboration in my classroom. Students will build academic language, promote sharing of ideas and learn to get along with others, no matter what language is being spoken. I want my students to feel comfortable in being collaborative thinkers.
My Project
I believe new tables will help prompt a more collaborative learning environment for my students. When using our new octagon activity tables, my students will be inspired to think like mathematicians, ask questions like a scientist and design like an engineer through STEM/STEAM center activities. Traditional sitting doesn't allow for collaboration opportunities among my students. These 21st Century tables will allow my students to engage in learning opportunities. My students will be proficient, independent learners in basic communicating skills, problem solving, and team building skills. The octagon activity center tables will give my students practice in the area of speaking and sharing ideas during their collaboration centers. My students will have the opportunities to hear new words they haven't been exposed to before because they will be working collaboratively in small group centers instead of whole class. Being engaged with our technology and STEAM bins in small groups will build confidence in all of my English Language Learners. They will take the skills and knowledge they learn from their peers to improve their own language skills. Students who are confident in their speaking and sharing abilities will be ready to express their thinking to others around them. My students will learn problem solving skills that will prepare them for the 21st century.
