We are one of two pre-k classrooms in our school. Our class consists of 20 students from very diverse backgrounds and academic levels. Our school is considered a high poverty school and due to recent budget cuts, resources have become few and far between, leaving me to purchase many items out of pocket.
My classroom provides my students an opportunity to learn in a variety of ways through songs, dance, play, books, toys, nature, and technology.
I would like an opportunity to provide my students with a wider range of resources to meet their individual academic, cognitive, and social needs.
My Project
This last year I stepped into my block center and found two children trying to take apart a car. I asked why they were trying to take apart the car and they replied, "so we can put it back together." I knew then that I wanted to open a new center so kids can do just this.
I will call my new center construction destruction.
I want to provide kids with different materials that they can construct or destruct. In this center they will have a light table and see through magnetic blocks to use for building. They will also have cars and planes that they can put together and/or take apart. Finally, all kids love dinosaurs. They will have magnetic dinosaur parts that they can put together and take apart.
My favorite part of pre-k is following the lead of the kids. This construction destruction center is inspired by watching the kids play. I want to provide the materials to help them explore their own interests!
