Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help us build our vocabulary using Fancy Nancy as our guide. This fun character introduces children to new and interesting words in a fun and engaging way. About half of my students are English Language Learners and therefore have a huge deficit in vocabulary. Learning new words can be fun!
My students are amazing children who come from low-income families.
At my school 96% of students are on free or reduced priced lunch. Our school is in a large, urban district in Illinois, and currently our district is in extreme debt. We don't have the funds to buy new and innovative supplies, but the teachers at my school are very motivated to give our students the education they deserve. Though half of my students are true English Language Learners, all children are grappling with learning the English language and explicit vocabulary instruction is necessary for all my students.
My Project
Vocabulary is such an important part of learning to read and write. Without a wide variety of words to choose from, voice is lost. I am looking for a way to make vocabulary instruction meaningful and authentic. The Fancy Nancy books will allow me to use literature to engage my students, allow them to hear the words being used in context, and then they will be able to read the words in the text themselves. My goal is to create a "Fancy Word Wall" where students will be able to add words they find in books and use in their own writing or conversation. I want these high-level words to become part of their oral and written language as opposed to memorizing words for a test.
Please help me reach my goal of teaching vocabulary in a meaningful and effective way.
Your donations will make a difference for years to come in the lives of my students. This project will make a big difference in my instruction and in my students' engagement during word study. Please help my students find their voice by giving them the gift of words!
