My students need a strong reading and writing foundation as they move out of Kindergarten. I have chosen the most researched-based reading and writing curriculum including Lucy Calkins Units of Study, Words Their Way, and Writing Workshop.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I will be a first year teacher and have not yet officially met my students for the 2018-2019 school year. However, I have been able to visit the two Kindergarten classrooms and saw several of the students that will be with me next year.
They are vivacious readers who are so motivated to share their new reading and writing skills with their classmates, teacher, and parents!
They were working in small groups and some reading independently. Already I noticed so many students using a few reading strategies that will help them in 1st grade.
Both classes have so much energy and were so eager to show me some of their writing. This type of motivation is what I hope to continue and foster next year through Readers and Writers Workshop.
My Project
My students are coming from Kindergarten, where they have started to build their fundamental understanding of reading, writing and spelling. Receiving these resources will further strengthen these critical skills during this foundational time as readers and writers. This is why I chose a project that has evidence-based curriculums that not only nurture foundational skills but push students to go beyond the standards.
I have chosen the highly researched Lucy Calkin's Readers and Writers Workshop Units of Study and Words Their Way series.
These curriculum will supplement the few classroom texts we have. These materials understand how each content area builds off each other and should be used together in order to support student growth simultaneously. I have used these curriculum materials in other classrooms and have seen how positively students respond to this fluid way of instruction.
I believe reading and writing are the keys to accessing knowledge. Starting my students off with a strong foundation will mean inevitable continued growth throughout the rest of their lives.
