This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Hello everyone! I am entering my 3rd year as a kindergarten teacher at a Title I school in East Oakland, CA, where we serve students of color, where over 90% are from low-income backgrounds.
My kindergarteners are among some of the most curious, energetic, and resilient students I have had the pleasure of working with and I hope to continue their hunger for learning through providing access to grade-level reading material that can be used outside the classroom.
My students learn best and are most engaged when we use reading materials they are interested in and familiar with, like Pete the Cat and culturally inclusive books. With your support, I will be able to provide each student with one free book (theirs to keep) at the end of each month as the book titles correspond with the month they would be receiving it. These books are for students and families to keep in order to build their at-home libraries and support student literacy at home.
At this time, this project is solely to provide books for the months of January through June, as the first half of the school year already has the necessary books.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
