Build Our Fifth Grade Nonfiction Library

Help me give my students a variety of nonfiction books to read as we do not have a library at our school and have limited access to technology.

FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Pat's classroom raised $172

My Students

My 5th graders are a diverse group of students who reside in Oakland, California and other nearby East Bay cities in Alameda County. Like many California public schools, we are underfunded and under-resourced. My students do not have access to a school library and have limited access to technology. Therefore, I often need to buy books with my own limited budget or my own money.

My fifth graders learn both Mandarin Chinese and English in a public school that just won the national Blue Ribbon schools award.

My Project

My students need access to a variety of stimulating nonfiction books to read in order to strengthen their reading and research skills. I want students to be able to do research on topics of their choosing and share their reports with younger students in the school, but there are not enough books in my classroom or the school to allow them to have a good selection of nonfiction reading and topics.

The standards in fifth grade emphasize reading nonfiction, and I see this project involving reading, note-taking, research, and writing as an important building block for their success in middle school and beyond.

I want to try to partially close the gap in resources for my students because they do not have access to a school library
