My Students

I have 25 students in my class. The majority of them receive free lunch. Our school is in a low socio-economic area in the district. I have 5 students in my class who are speaking English on a very limited basis. There are 2 who are new to the country in the last year. The kids as well as their parents are very motivated to learn. Most of the parents both work, therefore it is difficult to get parent support in the classroom. I also have a large number of single parents in my class.

My Project

Kids nowadays are so much into the digital world they rarely get to put their hands onto something and build. By supplying our class with building bricks and magnetic building tiles, the kids will have opportunities to develop and build a better understanding for shapes in the real world as well as the classroom. It will also give them opportunities to be creative and build many different structures while also developing better social skills. Living in the Salt Lake Valley causes us to have many bad air days with pollution. When we have these days, the kids are not allowed to go outside to run and play. They have to stay in the classroom where we have limited supplies to entertain them. Many times we just end up having the kids watch a video. By suppling our class with the building bricks, wooden blocks, magnetic blocks , and other supplies, the kids will have the chance to develop play skills as well as enhance understanding of shapes, building techniques, and steps to accomplish building tasks.
