Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Brian and Ricardo came to the US speaking no English and 18 months later they are excelling in all classes. Ricardo wants to build the best video game ever played. Isabella want to be a scientist. Zaria loves computers and wants to build i-phone cases. Jermaine simply wants to know what is coding.

The students have been working with professional coders who are volunteering weekly at the school. As a teacher, I like things to be organized and planned out and was not sure how a Coding Club with no plan was going to work. The coders sat down with the students and just listened to what they wanted to do and make. Together they planned out projects, explored ideas on websites, and now learning how to make their project happen. It has been beautiful to watch the excitement of the students as they explore and follow their curiosity and the coders' enthusiasm for teaching the students how to use programs to create 3D projects that will be used for games and other coding activities. The students are creating their own projects, the coders are guiding them, and I help make sure everyone has supplies to make the coding dreams come true.

Students are learning coding skills such as writing code, using 3D design apps, working with 3D printers and other tech skills. More importantly, they are learning to imagine a project, create a plan and execute that plan. Often times, middle schoolers will go through their day passively- empty vessels simply being filled. Through the Coding Club they are the sparks! They are actively thinking of projects and figuring out ways to make those projects happen. This process involves critical thinking (what do I need to make this happen, how do I know if this is the best resources, how will I use it) and reflection (did that work, how can I make it better). Two vital skills that if a young person can use and make it an internal process for all learning can lead to a successful academic career and adulthood. Students are also collaborating with coders, discussing ideas and strategies. They are working with their peers, reviewing each other's work plans and sharing successes.

In Their Own Words

We are Isabella, Zaria, Jermaine, and Ricardo and we are part of the Coding Club at our school. We want to create projects and make them happen such as making race cars with the 3D printer and learn to code them to race using our cell phones. We also want to design i-phone cases for our phones, code games like Tetris, and learn cool skills that will help us become smarter and more capable students. Some of us just like to explore ideas and others want to become famous computer scientists.

With the help of our teacher and volunteers we get to do explore, dream and make our own inventions and creations. Instead of being told that too much screen time is bad, we are using screen time to make things we care about. For example, we can make Pokémon balls or Minecraft games. In the Coding Club we tell the adults what we want to learn and how to help instead of the other way around. We are in charge of my very own projects that we dream, design and make ourselves.

Our school has a bad reputation. No one wants to go here and kids leave to go to other schools. The thing is that we do cool stuff here and this club is helping us not only do cool things but be a smarter people. We are learning what other kids probably already know. This is our chance to be great! In the neighborhood there is no grocery store, no Starbucks- nothing but corner stores. We do not have what other kids have but now we do and we want to take advantage of this and be smart too.
