Build Apps & Critical Thinking Skills ~ Mobile CSP

My students need 25 tablets to create mobile apps for android devices. Students will be taking AP Mobile CSP (Computer Science Principles) for the first time this year. All levels are welcomed into this course.

My Students

Each class begins with content, student-led discussions in the context of everyday life decisions. "It's raining today, therefore I will need to use an umbrella. If I don't use an umbrella, then I will get wet." These simple conversations lend to the understanding of conditional programming.

Our school has a growing population of culturally diverse students and beginning language learners.

One third of our student population receives free or reduced price lunch and breakfast. Our school was renovated several years ago, with an additional high school built in a different location in the city. The population of each school fluctuates between 2,200 and 2,500 students. The schools offer a large range of foundation, extension, honor, and advanced placement courses. Students do not all comprehend at the same rate or at the same level. Students who struggle in some subjects find programming more familiar and drive themselves to be successful. My classroom is an engaging atmosphere for all levels of students.

My Project

Building apps will require Android devices for the Mobile CSP course. The ASUS tablet is a proven Android device that is inexpensive and robust and will fulfill the students' needs for the course. Students will learn critical problem solving skills and the required skills for computer science principles using the Mobile CSP Course and App Inventor. Students will have the option to take the AP test at the end of the course.

Building the apps is fun and allows students to build problem solving strategies and design skills.
