This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are awesome! I teach students with special needs in kindergarten through third grade who have been identified as being on the autism spectrum, have speech/language deficits, other health impairments, and/or a specific learning disability. My school is located in a suburb of Los Angeles County and the students come from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
My students are all working towards the same grade level standards as their peers despite the many academic, social, and behavioral challenges of autism that they experience on a daily basis.
Many of my students have limited language skills, auditory and visual processing limitations and require speech-to-text and text-to-speech technology support for reading and writing activities. They learn best when I integrate the arts, science, and movement into my lessons!
My Project
My students love building with LEGO sets and using on-line apps to embark on the world of coding. To support the Next Generation Science standards through STEM activities, I want them to have hands-on experience with engineering and coding with LEGO!
My learners will use the LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 kits to learn how to build, code, and program.
Using the LEGO WeDo 2.0 kits, my students will work with their peers in our special day classroom as well as in the general education program, dual-language program, and deaf and hard of hearing programs; collaborating with same-age peers as they learn how to build, code, and program. By working with their peers, they are preparing for 21st-century careers in science, technology, engineering, and math as well as the skills they will need to work collaboratively with others.
