This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first grade teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school district in the South Bronx. My class is filled with vibrant, eager learners who require a variety of ways to learn. About seventy-five percent of my students are performing below grade level. Many of my students live in shelters, receive out-of-classroom services for speech, reading, and math, and are English language learners or have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
My students face many challenges each day and deserve nothing short of the best to help them reach their full potential and beyond.
For many of them, I am the only comfort, security, and positive source in their life. I want to make my students feel welcomed, appreciated, loved, and know that they can do anything they put their minds to!
My Project
The hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit will help my low performing, ENL, and special needs students build up their math fluency to become fluency mathematicians. Many of my students are struggling with math fluency and understanding grade level concepts. They are tactile and visual learners who require various hands-on resources to enhance their learning experiences. This math resource will be used for independent practice, small groups, and one-on-one instruction. My students will be able to grasp all the necessary math concepts for their grade level and meet state standards. This resource will also help to build their confidence in math and move them toward becoming excellent math problem solvers.
