Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With almost 1,200 students, our school is the largest elementary in a major urban school district.
We have an amazing community of dedicated faculty, staff and students.
Our school is very diverse, with the staff and students representing over twenty different countries. My students are native English, Spanish, French, Amharic, Swahili and Arabic speakers. Many of my students are immigrants or first generation Americans. The majority of my students are low socioeconomic and all of them live in apartments. The students in my school are eligible for free breakfast/lunch and typically have not had Legos of their own. In spite of the lack of resources, my students have a great enthusiasm for learning!
My Project
The Lego base plates will be mounted to the class wall to create a vertical learning space. This wall will be used to explore the concepts of decimals, fractions, angles, data, area, perimeter and much, much more! The wall will also be used to create bridges, ramps, and tracks to test a number of different science concepts.
The majority of my students have not had the opportunity to create and learn with Legos.
These building blocks are an expensive luxury that most at-risk students do not get to interact with as children. I believe Legos provide a chance for children to acquire and connect numerous spatial, geometric, and number concepts. These materials will help to inspire creativity, imagination and a love for learning!
