My Students

My students love to learn and they are engaged in learning each day. While we are privileged to have a classroom and materials that foster learning, my students could greatly benefit from more novels. Having more novels would allow engagement in learning in a completely different ways.

Our urban elementary school is in the highest poverty, with 100% of our students K-6 receiving free breakfast and lunch each day.

Our school is also a Title I funded school. We have the privilege of receiving reading interventions and grants that help our students improve reading skills. My students face struggles in their everyday lives, and for many of my students the safest, most reliable place in their lives is school. My students work hard, understand the value of their education, and are eager to learn. My students deserve the very best!

My Project

We have a variety of books in our classroom, but we don't have enough 4th grade books. Prior to teaching I purchased a lot of lower leveled books thinking I'd teach young children. I ended up spending my first two years of teaching in 6th grade. A lot of our books are either to low or to high of a level for most students. I believe that students will greatly benefit from having on grade level books. Having these books will give them the opportunity to come in contact with new vocabulary. Building their vocabulary will help them become better readers and speakers.
