My students need multicultural and diverse books (in various genres) to develop a world view, to look beyond themselves through the eyes of young characters who they connect with and/or in books that speak to them.
I am the 6th and 7th-grade Literacy Teacher. My school is a public school in the School District of Philadelphia. The students in our school have been exposed to a plethora of literature since kindergarten. In our classroom, our curriculum is taught in Readers Workshop and Writers Workshop. The students are encouraged to read books that interest them and write narrative, informational, and opinion pieces of their choice. Students are encouraged to read a variety of genres including, but not limited to Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Fantasy, Biography, Autobiography, Science, etc.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know; The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."(Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut)
I completely agree with Dr. Seuss. I want my students to have the opportunity to read literature that is enjoyable and that will also help them to grow as readers and writers. I want them to explore cultures around the world. I want them to learn what it is to be socially and culturally aware so that they can use what they learn from reading to help protect, support and advocate for themselves and others.
My Project
The multicultural and diverse literature will encourage students to become engaged citizens. They will gain insight into the facades of various cultures around the world and develop respect for all people regardless of gender, race, culture, or socioeconomic status.
My students will see that I am committed to ensuring that they are provided with literature that is not only engaging, but also encourages social awareness as they continue to develop their own thoughts, ideas, and opinions.
My students are strong readers who enjoy sharing what they learn while reading and incorporating the writing styles of professional authors in their own writing.
