I am a fifth grade teacher at a rural elementary school in beautiful Burke County, North Carolina. We have a 44% free lunch rate, and unfortunately, many of our parents are out of work due to the lack of textile and furniture jobs. As sad as it may seem, many of my students do not own books, and as a result, are not strong readers. I teach a struggling reading class and promote reading every day. I have silent reading time each day in the classroom and also ask my students to spend at least 20 minutes at home reading. To help achieve this goal, I have a small classroom library so that my students can check out books. However, I am in dire need of more books. I often buy used books at Salvation Army stores and discount stores, but I do not have the personal resources to buy all the books I need. I am asking for a set of 50 books to add to my classroom library. These are current, high interest books that I believe my students will enjoy. These books will be read again and again each year and will benefit many children. I believe that by building my classroom library, I will be building better readers that will have more opportunities in life. Please help me place books in the hands of children. Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
