Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in inner-city Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income families. Often, their parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and are not always able to provide even basic school supplies for their children. Many students also do not have regular access to books and literacy, or even regular homework support, and therefore rely heavily on the teachers and other school staff to support their academic needs. Despite this, however, they are an eager bunch of students who come to school ready to learn new things every day. They are inquisitive about how things work and why things happen, and even though I don't always have the answers, they trust me to guide and teach them the best I can.

My Project

Many of my students have explored the use of art materials such as markers and crayons, but many have not had a chance to express their creativity using materials such as air-drying clay, oil pastels, colored pencils, and watercolor crayons. With these materials, they will be inspired to engage in a variety of mediums to be makers and creators.

As my students and I continue to learn and study about many famous artists, such as Frida Kahlo, Romare Bearden, and Mary Cassatt, and their styles, they will use these materials to create their own artwork in the style of these masters.

I believe one of the best ways to engage students in learning is to engage their creative mind, and to supplement reading, writing, and math lessons with art lessons. Young children also need a variety of sensory experiences to engage their whole brains, which will be provided in the exploration of these materials, and therefore contribute to cultivating well-balanced students.
