I am a Special Education teacher in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. I teach in the Intermediate Severe Handicap classroom at Collins Elementary School in Pinole, CA, grades 4-5-6. The students in my classroom have moderate to severe delays in a number of functional areas, including cognitive, motor, social, and speech/communication. A number of students are orthopedically impaired and are in wheelchairs. All of the students in my classroom struggle with basic social and communication skills. It is very beneficial for special education students to practice their social skills with general education students. Activities and games that emphasize basic social, communication, and academic skills can be a very successful tool for this practice. Our school has very few games of this nature, and I would like to start a daily communication/social group for the students in my classroom to work with general education students. These basic skills games will help special education and general education students form bonds and friendships through positive social experiences. Help us build a bridge between special education and general education!
