My Students
I love my students, and, if you could meet them, you would, too! As the music teacher, I teach every student in my small-town school; 550 students come through my door every week. They are smart, inquisitive, insightful, and oh-so funny! They constantly make me laugh!
My students need to learn and explore the world around them by moving, dancing, playing, and creating!
Providing the supplies my student need to succeed is so important as the majority of students in our school district come from low-income households and many cannot bring supplies from home. The average income in our district is $19,000 a year. All of our students receive free breakfast daily, and many receive free lunch as well. Budgets for supplies are incredibly limited, so we are fortunate to have donors like you who help us meet the students' needs!
My Project
My students are connecting science with music by playing music about the natural world!
For our spring musical, my students will incorporate science and music to perform the musical BUGZ!
My students need several instruments to create an amazing performance: we need a bass metallophone and alto xylophone to create an outdoor soundscape that mimics the music insects perform nightly. We need the musical “BUGZ!” to perform and learn about etomology. We need a few extra mallets for our instruments so that student can share during the performance. Finally, we need place to store our instruments when we're done!
Imagine a performance where the students sing about the different sort of insects we learn about in elementary school. Additionally, we will use the instruments to create a "soundscape" - the sounds of swarming locusts, the gentle chirping of crickets, the hum of the cicadas, and finally create a round of sounds that mimic the sounds of insects on a summer night, immersing our audience in an aural description of the most populous creatures on Earth. In between the musical selections, students will perform the pre-written play that accompanies the musical AND their own original compositions about insects while wearing costumes that are student-created in our art classes, allowing us to integrate science, language arts, art and music together in the same performance.
We will perform this musical at a family engagement night to teach our entire community about the insects we share our planet with!
