We are a Head Start Program in North Carolina. Our program serves children up to 5 years old from low-income families. Many of our children are minorities and are from young, single parent homes. In our NC PreK classroom, we have 18 children with 2 teachers. We provide all the meals (breakfast, lunch, snack), and a safe learning environment.
"Our mission is to help young children and families reach their full potential." Our resources/materials are limited.
As a teacher, I have to get creative and make good use of what we do have versus what we don't have. So we reuse and recycle materials that can be found in any way, from bottle caps to paper towel rolls. My students need additional materials that will help promote and support their learning at school.
My Project
I'm known as the "bug teacher" in my school. But not every child or teacher shares my passion for bugs. With the materials that are in my project, it will help ease the fear of bugs to some of my children. The specimen centers, discovery kits, and counters will help in learning about bugs. They will be able to touch, feel and look at the bugs. The play dirt will be great in our sand/water table with pretend bugs hiding in them. They can continue to dig in our playground to find real bugs.
We can learn so much from watching something grow, taking care of it to releasing it into the world.
It's like what we do as PreK teachers give it love, support, and knowledge and watch them off to Kindergarten. With our project fully funded we will be able to see ladybugs and butterflies in our classroom. My hope is that the children not only learn about different bugs but learn the importance and role it has in our world.
