A big part of our first grade science work is tending to the Brooklyn New School farm. Each class has a chance to go down and get their hands dirty once a week planting, tending and harvesting fruits and vegetables. In the spring, when the farm is coming back to life the kids begin to notice other creatures waking up--BUGS!
Without insects, our lives would be vastly different.
They are, by far, the most common animals on our planet, and they make our world much more interesting. Our children derive a great deal of satisfaction in watching ants work, bees pollinate, or dragonflies patrol. Part of our insect study is not only learning about insect parts and life cycles, but learning about how insects help our farm and how much we actually rely on them to help our farm go from seed to plate!
The materials we are requesting will help bridge our insect study from farm to classroom. The two digital microscopes can be charged up and taken down to the farm. Kids can record and take pictures of insects in their natural habitat and take them back to the room to study further. The books we are requesting are rich with photos and facts that will keep our children engaged and help them as they write their expert insect books in our writing workshop. Having actual models of insect life cycles, real insects in resin, and gentle bug catchers (and releasers!) will allow kids time and space to observe and wonder and learn.
