Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever learned a new language? Language, like a muscle, is developed when it is exercised. It can't be taught by just reading it or hearing it, but by speaking it, as well. My students learn English, and continue to develop their native languages when they talk about real problems and experiences. That is why the subject I teach, science, is so instrumental in their language development.

My students don't just read or hear about science, they do science.

We need the materials and organisms that will get them engaged, and give them a fun reason to be curious and social.

My Project

This coming fall, we will be exploring the adaptations that organisms have for their habitats, especially our urban habitat, New York City. While we will be observing birds and people outdoors, it is important for students to practice observation skills and scientific communication in a more controlled environment, the classroom.

Working with living organisms such as insects and arthropods is a great way to show students that science is something to be experienced, and not just told about.

The arthropods I am requesting will allow my students to ask questions, alter conditions on their bench-top, and spend extended time watching what happens. These experiences will be the foundation of all of the scientific skills we will learn during the year.

Please donate and help me make the start of the next school year one to remember!
