My Project
High school students will learn essential financial literacy skills by creating and managing a personal budget based on real-world scenarios. Students will work in small groups to simulate budgeting for a month based on assigned real-life roles. Students will be given an income, expenses, and financial challenges they must navigate, including rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, entertainment, and unexpected costs.
When young people lack the financial knowledge they need to make informed decisions, they are more likely to become trapped in cycles of poverty and debt.
Students will be introduce to budgeting and discuss income, expenses, savings, and the importance of financial planning. Students will be assigned real-life scenarios. Each group receives a different financial situation examples, single person making $2,500/month, a family of four living students will allocate their income to expenses using worksheets, game board or digital tools provided.
The teacher will give financial challenges throughout the activity such as unexpected financial situations medical bills, rent increase and have students adjust their budgets accordingly. Lastly, groups will present their budgeting decisions and discuss what they learned.
