Have you ever been curious to learn why people who are different than you express themselves differently? Mehndi is traditional artistic application of henna to the hands and feet. It is a means of personal adornment. Having art supplies to be creative is also a means of personal adornment.
I work in a public school in California that has over 19 nationalities attending.
We have a Punjabi population at our Title I school. Title I means we have more than 75% of our students are on free or reduced lunch plans. A majority of our students are Latino and African American. Due to budget cuts, the first thing cut is usually monies for art supplies.
My Project
I am requesting art supplies that will allow my students to create Mehndi gloves with gloves and art pens. Through this lesson, I intend to teach students about one of the cultures at our school. In order to build a cohesive community, we need to learn about one another. Using traditions of a cultural heritage is an easy way to break down barriers of misunderstanding. Doing it through art is a fun and creative way to build community in a diverse population.
In a world where bullying is so reputedly abundant, learning through art that we are more alike than different might cut down on disagreements and misunderstandings.
