Budget Cuts Must Not Cut Our Children's Future!

My students need a printer, paper, pencil sharpeners, and color pencils to help bring their monthly projects to life. I need resource books to help boost student learning and close the achievement gap.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Sanks's classroom raised $999

My Students

I teach in Englewood, an impoverished area in the inner city of Chicago, Illinois. Englewood is plagued with violence, poverty, and broken families. Our families are not able to always provide opportunities for children to discover the world around them. Our school plays an vital role in providing enriched opportunities to make sense of the world around them. Recently, our students had the opportunity to dissect frogs (thanks to a generous donor). Students wrote letters of gratitude to the sponsor and stated how this opportunity inspired them to pursue a career in the medical field. Others simply stated that it was an experience they would never forget.

With the various budget cuts that plague our schools, resources that provide students with enriched opportunities have threatened to be cut or eliminated.

My students are deserving of a quality education and budget cuts will just not cut it! I need help in ensuring that student performance is still improving and the achievement gap is closing.

My Project

My students are currently working on floor a geometry project. They are making blue prints for their dream homes. Due to the lack of resources, I have scaled down this project. I would of love to been able to use computer software and print out their blue prints to include in their vision boards. Currently, they are using graphing paper and pencil to complete their projects. Despite the lack of resources, student enthusiasm about this project is extremely high! I can only imagine the level of excitement if I had the supplies to do ALL components of this project.

Despite tight budgets, all schools across the country can and must continue to focus resources on improving instructional practice and student learning.

Though some schools have more flexibility than others, it has been clearly communicated to our school that this type of budget cut for the 2016-2017 will deeply impact our school. My students will need a printer, cartridges, color pencils, and copy paper. These supplies, will improve the quality of students final projects. Being able to print out their budgets and blue prints to their dream homes are ways in which our monthly math projects will come to life! Additionally, math resource books will build my capacity to boost student learning and close the achievement gap. Throughout my 10 years teaching 8th grade math, students have scored significantly lower in Statistics and Probability and Algebra. I need more creativity ways to teach these concepts.

By donating to this project, you will provide assistance in making the educational system stronger. Students will be given resources to help achieve their full potential. I need help in providing students with as many enriched opportunities as possible. Please don't allow the effects of school budget cuts to negatively impact our students' future.
