This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing! Most of them have been at the school since kindergarten, and our school is special because we can really develop a close relationship with each individual student as they grow up.
As a school with a bilingual program, students are immersed in rigorous instruction in both English and Spanish!
There are numerous benefits to being bilingual and students work very hard to access the curriculum despite it being a challenge. We have both Spanish-dominant and English-dominant speakers, which means that 100% of our students are second language learners!
My Project
This year, I will be working with middle schoolers grade 6-8 to build their fluency and vocabulary skills in Spanish. We are engaging in a variety of different activities to make this happen. One of which is partnering with the kindergarten classroom to participate in buddy reading.
We need authentic books in Spanish in order for our middle school students to get the kindergartners engaged!
Through buddy reading, the middle schoolers will continue to develop their Spanish Language skills as well as work with kindergartners to develop theirs. All of these students are bilingual learners and after doing buddy reading with kindergartners for a few years now, it is truly rewarding seeing them build community in the school through literacy.
