You might be wondering what Buddy Bag Writing is! Well, it is a new and exciting program that I would like to start with my fifth grade students. They are an energetic group of children without reading or writing materials of their own at home. There are also very little resources at school. My proposal is to get the children excited about writing through historical non-fiction books. They will be able to write their own autobiography after reading those of other famous individuals.
The first step in this project is to send home two identical historical non-fiction books per pair of students. Each student will read 3 chapters per night. When they complete the reading, they will journal in a notebook the important facts they read. Then, in the morning, they will pair up and compare the notes that they have taken. Each will look at the others notebooks to gain an insight into what the buddy learned versus what they have learned.
In this language arts experience, students will be able to see how their buddy interprets the reading material and how they are writing. I am confident that the students will experience success in writing their own autobiography after sharing the historical non-fiction books and journals.
The materials necessary for this project are 30 sturdy bags that the books and journals can be placed in, 30 journals, and 15 sets of 2 books each for the reading.
I want my students to have this experience so that they can see the value in writing about themselves and how important their lives are and have been. I also want them to have this experience, because I believe that reading and writing go together and it will help to strengthen reading skills and writing skills.
