My middle school in King City, California has 840 students in sixth -eighth grade. A majority of these students are English Language Learners and more than three‑quarters of the students come from low‑income households. We are a Title I and Title III school where most students qualify for free and reduced lunches.
We offer exploratory classes with a variety of opportunities for student enrichment and language development.
The students in my exploratory class have an opportunity to explore art, artists, and art styles using the medium of watercolors. I incorporate reading fluency, comprehension and art history along with beginning watercolor techniques. This gives the students a fun way to be creative while learning. It is amazing to see how creative they can be if given the opportunity.

Students will participate in watercolor painting exercises and create individual projects using these supplies.
Watercolor students will develop an understanding of beginning techniques of watercolor painting, learn about different movements in art history, and styles of famous artists. With the appropriate supplies, students can explore and be creative, feel successful, and help them build self-esteem. The arts strengthen problem solving and critical thinking skills that spill over into academic achievement. Art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world.
Art styles and their artists that students will study are Pop Art, Abstract Art, Cubism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Pointillism, Renaissance, Realism and Surrealism.
