This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my class are very artistic and enjoy drawing across the curriculum. They have not yet discovered quality art tools. When they do, I know their creativity will have no limits.
My students are imaginative and creative.
They enjoy exploring the world around them. They attend an inner city school in Southern California. Most students come from families with limited resources and limited formal education. Students enjoy coming to school and are eager to express themselves through drawing
My Project
An Art student from high school came to share her portfolio and my students were inspired when she showed them her beautiful sketchbook. They are inspired to be as good as her. Throughout the year students participate in Art classes, where they learn how to use what they know about color, size, and shape to become better artists. Students will create still life drawings using the markers and pencils. They will also be creating abstract artwork in which they will explore line value and the use of color to create different moods. We will be using Jazz music as inspiration to create drawings. Students will learn about Henri Matisse and how he used Jazz as an inspiration for his artwork. In the process, students learn from each other as they share their illustrations to receive constructive feedback from their peers. This process builds a sense of community in the classroom, as well as provide another form of expression for children.
The colorful markers, the sketch pencils, erasers and sharpeners will give students the message that Art is important and more importantly that they are important.
These materials will help students develop their observation skills as well as spark their creativity. Students will learn how to express themselves visually as well as communicate their observations about each other's artwork.
