This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like to have a new pencil and a blank paper in front of you? The possibilities were endless! My students have artistic talents waiting to blossom. With your help we can embark on many artistic adventures.
My students are imaginative and creative.
They enjoy exploring the world around them. They attend an inner city school in Southern California. Most students come from families with limited resources and limited formal education. Students enjoy coming to school and are eager to express themselves through drawing.
My Project
Every year a high school art student has come to share her artwork with my students. They are inspired to be as good as her. Her artwork inspires them to learn different techniques. Throughout the year students participate in Art classes where they learn how to use what they know about color, size, and shape to become better artists. By making still life drawings, students learn about value and perspective. They learn from each other as they share their illustrations to receive constructive feedback from their peers. This process builds a sense of community in the classroom. The portfolios and the pencil pouches will keep them organized. The beautiful paper, pencils, erasers and and crayons will give students the message that Art is important.
These materials will help students develop their observation skills as well as spark their creativity.
Without these art supplies we will be using newsprint and district issued pencils of inferior quality. Our pencils break very easily and are difficult to sharpen. When we erase, the eraser tops fall off. These supplies will help our class focus on the actual Art lesson. Students are so excited about Art despite the obstacles they face every day.
