Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In these tough economic times, my students and I have found creative and inexpensive ways to build science activities that challenge their thinking. However, budget cuts have left us without index cards with which to practice their scientific vocabulary or paper upon which to write their reports.

I teach 8th grade physical science at a predominantly Latino middle school in an inner-city CA neighborhood where over 60% of the adults never finished high school, and almost 40% are living below the poverty line.

These financial and demographic constraints prevent many students from participating in educational experiences that many of us take for granted. Middle school is the time when students develop the cognitive ability to use science to make sense of the world. It is really important that students get the chance to experience real experimental science because they can use those skills to become confident, critical thinkers. Our school strives to give our students as many opportunities as possible to explore scientific material and develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives, as well as produce quality projects that develop the skills they will need in high school, college, and the workplace.

My Project

My classroom leans heavily towards hands-on science, so we have laboratory activities about every other class meeting. I have been successful in designing lessons and activities around recycled and/or re-purposed materials that allow for trial and error, challenge students' thinking, and engage them in activities that don't break the bank. However, when it comes down to giving students practical worksheets that reinforce their learning or help them master their understanding, our school is strapped for paper. By donating to this project, you will be freeing up my classes to not only explore and test out scientific ideas, but also to analyze the data they collect and write about and develop their thinking in ways that will help to prepare them for further rigorous science courses in high school and college. I am requesting 20 packs of index cards and 10 packs of paper to help with our written science work.

The way things are right now, I am always stressing about ways to modify lessons in order to use less paper, rather than focusing on delivering the lessons that address my students' learning needs.

In a print-rich learning environment, this is a critical deterrent. Your donation will not only free me up to devise lessons that best meet my students' needs, but will also give my students the resources they need to explore, analyze, and explain how the world works.
