Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a title one school. A large amount of the students are English Language Learners which makes teaching a joy and challenge as well. Statistics prove that children(especially English language learners)learn best in an environment that is rich in hands-on experiences. This is why having materials such as science manipulative's is very imperative to their overall academic success. Without solid and meaningful experiences, my students may not have the advantage to empower themselves from poverty and have the ability to uplift themselves so poverty does not become generational.

My students live in a low economic community. These students come from immigrant families and have limited life learning experiences. My students love reading about animals and the habitats that they live in. They have many questions and natural curiosities about these given subjects. I feel by having these materials in my class they will have such joy in knowing that they can, at any given time have the opportunity to pick up a book, or center item and find the answer to all of the great questions that are in their minds. With a declining economy it is difficult as an educator to provide my children with experiences such as trips or the needed resources because the money is not available. It is so exciting to think that my students can go as near as their science learning center to discover things such as the habitat or life cycle of a given favorite animals. That will indeed put many smiles on their young faces.

The resources that I will need to empower my students to become more well rounded students is to have science centers which will allow them to have a hands -on experience. The science centers with the insects, bugs, ocean animals will allow the students to explore their natural and far away habitats. They can also learn about the life cycle of various animals as well as the role that they play in the food chain in our ever changing and growing world.

Your help will ensure that my students will have a passion to continue to learn and question various topics in science. This will help the students to connect the concepts they will learn in science centers to their everyday lives, which in return will help them become more conscious of their environment. I believe that the more you put into the young minds of today, the better a world we can all take pride in!!!
