This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 32 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after school programs as well so they spend the majority of their day in school.
My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.
We not only focus our academic goals but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.
My Project
My fourth graders enjoy Writer's Workshop. Their favorite part of the writing process in the publishing stage. Often we celebrate our writing by presenting it verbally to the class and showcasing them on our Writer's Wall. I believe it would be beneficial for students to have the opportunity to read and reread as often they would like each other's published pieces of work for a few reasons. First of all, they can share ideas and learn from each other. They can give each other feedback. They can get to know each other's opinions and thoughts. Since they like to include illustrations with their writing pieces, they will get the opportunity to share their artwork as well.
Personalized class books created by the students will be added to the classroom library for all to share.
The binding machine, binding spines, binding presentation covers, and the report covers will allow us to neatly preserve our published writing and make them accessible for students not only to share with each other but to share with their families, other classes, and the school staff. My nine-year-olds will feel like accomplished authors and illustrators.
