My Students

Vincent Van Gogh said,"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." The one lesson I NEED my students to leave my class having learned is to believe in themselves. What better place to start than with art?

This is my first year at a very special school.

With just about 300 children in Preschool-Sixth Grade and a very devoted staff, we are a close-knit team. My students are curious and passionate, yet they doubt themselves constantly. One of their teachers last year left during the year to fight cancer, and the students had a string of substitutes in and out of their lives. She passed away at the beginning of this year, as the students know. When this year started, they would balk at the slightest hint of challenge - sometimes in defeat, sometimes in anger. They are learning to rely on themselves and each other (with a little push) and to trust that they are cared for. The other day, one of my girls asked if I was coming back next year and seemed skeptical when I told her I was. "But really? Like I can see you again?" I nodded. She smiled and laughed.

My Project

I am requesting paper, frames, and art portfolios for an end-of-the-year project which will tap into their natural curiosity and creativity. First, they will learn photography basics (their art teacher has been out sick all year) by experimenting with nature photography. We have already acquired donated digital cameras. Then they will learn to critique artwork and use photos as poetic inspiration. Since almost all of them are English Language Learners, the freedom of poetry will encourage them to take risks and play with the language. To wrap it all up, we will create a gallery by framing their work and inviting parents to celebrate with us. Each child will also take home a portfolio of everyone's work

Think of a time when you, as a child, felt the thrill of a success - the pride, the boost of self-confidence.

I am so excited to give my students a chance to shine! They will be able to find beauty in their world, use real cameras, and inspire others with their work. Their feeling of accomplishment as real artists and authors will help build a foundation of perseverance and motivation for years to come.
