This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are curious about the world around them. They enjoy using their imaginations and creativity in their learning. Throughout the year students work hard to reach their potentials.
They learn how to see things from the perspective of a scientist, an engineer, a writer, an artist, a historian, and a mathematician.
They attend an inner city school in Southern California. Most students come from families with limited resources and limited formal education.
Unfortunately our school budget keeps dwindling every year. This limits the materials students have at their disposal to make learning come to life. Despite this, students enjoy coming to school and having fun while learning.
My Project
A recent college student with an art background came to share her portfolio, as well as teach them some drawing techniques. My students were inspired when she showed them her sketch pad and all her drawing supplies. Unfortunately, I can only offer them crayons and pencils that break easily.
Despite our limited resources, my students learn how to use what they know about color, size, and shape to become better artists.
I am asking for art supplies including sketch pads, paper, markers ad pencils so they can expand their work. My students will create still life drawings using the requested markers and pencils. They will also be creating abstract artwork in which they will explore line, value and the use of color to create different moods. We will be using Jazz music as inspiration to create drawings. Students will learn about Henri Matisse and how he used Jazz as an inspiration for his artwork.
In the process, students learn from each other as they share their illustrations to receive constructive feedback from their peers. This process builds a sense of community in the classroom, as well as provide another form of expression for children. At the end of the year, they will be creating an Art exhibit and inviting their parents and peers to view it. With your help it will be a success.
