Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember painting your first masterpiece on canvas? My second graders have not yet experienced the joy and satisfaction of a final art piece on canvas.
My students attend a Title I school in Los Angeles, California.
Most receive free or reduced lunch. Although we are minutes from several museums, many have not visited one unless through a school field trip. With district budget cuts to the arts and emphasis on high stakes testing, the challenge is to plan opportunities to include the arts in students' day.
I have a diverse and gregarious group of second graders. They are very creative and deserve the opportunity to paint a masterpiece using real artists' materials.
My Project
After studying selected artists and styles such as Delaunay, Van Gogh, and Warhol, students will mix the acrylic paint and create their own masterpiece on canvas! The color and texture will be different from the usual construction paper and school paint. The paint on their final masterpiece will not chip and fade easily, nor will the canvas easily tear and wrinkle.
All students should have the opportunity to study great artists and their styles, and then create their own masterpiece on canvas.
This will provide a satisfaction and pride in work well done! It is opening a different way of seeing and thinking. Also, students will be able to display their final masterpiece in our annual Art Fair.
